Automated synthesis of action selection policies for unmanned vehicles operating in adverse environments

چکیده
We address the problem of automated action selection policy synthesis for unmanned vehicles operating in adverse environments. We introduce a new evolutionary computation-based approach using which an initial version of the policy is automatically generated and then gradually refined by detecting and fixing its shortcomings. The synthesis technique consists of the automated extraction of the vehicle’s exception states and Genetic Programming (GP) for automated composition and optimization of corrective sequences of commands in the form of macro-actions to be applied locally. The focus is specifically on automated synthesis of a policy for Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) to efficiently block the advancement of an intruder boat toward a valuable target. This task requires the USV to utilize reactive planning complemented by short-term forward planning to generate specific maneuvers for blocking. The intruder is human-competitive and exhibits a deceptive behavior so that the USV cannot exploit regularity in its attacking behavior. Our results show that the performance of the automatically generated policy exceeds the performance of the hand-coded policy and thus demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed approach.

متن کاملSome Models for Autonomous Agents' Action Selection in Complex Partially Observable Environments
We study the resource-bounded autonomous agents acting in complex multi-agent and multi-task environments. In particular, we investigate various models of the agent action selection in such environments. Designing such autonomous decision making agents for non-episodic and partially observable dynamic environments is particularly challenging, due to a high-level demand such environments pose in...
متن کاملAutomated launch, recovery, and refueling for small unmanned aerial vehicles
Small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are hindered by their limited payload and duration. Consequently, UAVs spend little time in their area of operation, returning frequently to base for refueling. The effective payload and duration of small UAVs is increased by moving the support base closer to the operating area; however this increases risk to personnel. Performing the refueling operations a...

Achieving persistent autonomy requires unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) to be able to deal with a wide variety of complex planning situations. In this paper, we introduce a model-predictive, local trajectory planning algorithm for USVs operating in congested and highly dynamic traffic. The planner generalizes the Velocity Obstacle concept to systems with non-linear dynamics, nonholonomic constr...

Unmanned robotic vehicles are capable of performing desired tasks in unstructured, uncertain and potentially hostile environments.
